Music Reviews Artist: The Outfit Feat Capsolys, Lucinda Bell, and MetisTitle: Momo Live Gig Review

On Tuesday, May 1st a packed Momo’s crowd was treated to an eclectic mix of hip hop, spoken word, and song over live harp and drums. ‘The Outfit’, a collection of individual artists, coming together for their first joint performance – delivered LARGE.
Featuring South African hip-hop star Capsolys, UK Spoken Word Slam Champion and hip-hop artist Metis and accomplished singer / song-writer Lucinda Barry on vocals and harp, with support from James Breen on the drums, this gig was billed as high-energy, thought provoking…and sexy. It was all that!
Capsolys opened the show with his 2006 smash hit single tribute to ‘Africa’. With Lucinda and James harp and drums and Metis providing vocal support – Capsolys had a jam packed Momo’s crowd on its feet from the first beat, invoking the continent’s sounds, smell and feel. The love Capsolys feels for Africa was luminous and intoxicating, ‘Africa….calling my body, my spirit, my soul!’. It was an uplifting and inspiring tune – and set the stage for the night.
Capsolys next track was a smooth, cocky, catchy number called ‘ So Saucy’…the name alone makes you smile…‘Capsolys so slick, so smooth and so sweet”….Capsolys reflects on crime, poverty and social issues throughout …fusing intellectual observation with street-wise mantras: ’Success is a must and…cops cannot stop me!’’ – heads were bobbin and hands were raised. He smashed it.
When Metis’ turn came to command the mic, he did just that - hitting the crowd with a medley of intricate lyrical flows that literally left the audience spellbound. His first solo track ‘Sniff change’ supported by Capsolys, is about life continually evolving, changing, learning to be adaptive. “Seasons change, Rich become poor men, and Birds drop from the heavens down to the soil again. I’m born again, Explore with pen, Search for more and then, Blend my first step with my end”. With a dark up-tempo harp melody, and a deep drumline, The Outfit had the crowd hypnotized “I sniff change, rain is a comin, brainwaves are a hummin, true heads are a uh-hunh’n”. Uh-hunh.
Metis’ finale, ‘Brand new day’ (produced by Alex Turnbull - Ronin Records) featured Lucinda front and center stage providing killer vocals, is a collage of individual yet inter-related stories about turning the page on yesterday. It's thought provoking as always, "It's a brand new day, I was strugglin yesterday, woke up to a violent front page on the subway”, but an unexpected beauty of the track, was Metis showing a more light-hearted, fun flow alongside his typical seriousness and social consciousness. "Bring me a bloody mary for this fine Halle Berry dime canary, she's pressure in my coal mind, smiled and she co-signed"…..raise your hand if you wish you were Halle Berry at this moment! …This track had the crowd jumping and asking for the single release date! So when is it!?
Lucinda…Lucinda…Lucinda…not only is she a gifted and amazing harpist, Lucinda is also an extremely talented and versatile singer. Her soulful voice filled up Momo’s and sent shivers down my spine. Her haunting melodies and lyrics about ‘lessons in love’ floated through the air against the perfect backdrop of dimmed lighting, candles and burning incense, and provided a beautiful contrast to the hip-hop of Capsolys and Metis. Her cover of ‘Paint it Black’ was so perfect that I spied members of the audience banging their hands against the wall in appreciation! She was one part soulful songstress, one part diva and her stage presence was illuminating! It is no exaggeration to say that in a beautiful black dress, perched alongside a 7-foot antique harp, and with a voice that mesmerizing - all eyes were on her.
You could feel their energy and love onstage from start to finish! It was a refreshing change to see a hip-hop show where the artists were so talented, and having so much fun. They will be playing throughout London this summer – you wanna be at their next gig. Trust me!
