In writing this review, I can only ponder its usefulness. But because I had a great night at the Sage last week when the Bays played a live club gig to the masses, I feel I should at least try to put the brilliance of this act into words. Confused? Understandably so. Well, are solely a live act. They don’t rehearse. They don’t have records. And they don’t ever play the same thing; this is improvisation taken to its most extreme. So you see, in writing about this band, I can tell you that they were good, and recommend that you go and see them, but describing the sound is somewhat frivolous since when you catch them, it’ll be a totally different gig. The band is a four piece: Andy Gangadeen on the drums, Chris Taylor on bass and Jamie Odell and Simon Richmond on keys. Following a brief explanation of the band’s ethos, they kicked off with an ambient, trancey vibe whilst onlookers marvelled at the ease with which the sounds hung together. Most impressive was Andy, the drummer. After all, it is his prerogative to pick up the pace or slow things down; the rest of the band can only match his decision. Also notable was his day-glo orange hat which bounced up and down in the centre of the darkened stage as he thrashed away at the kit in front of him. Broken beats and a spattering of drum and bass rhythms became more prevalent as the night wore on despite the overall sound still feeling trance-based as a result of the atmospheric breakdowns and warped effects. Soon, the audience had forgotten that they were watching a band. So tight was the synergy between each of the band members and their instruments that it could have passed as a DJ playing a mixed set and accordingly the revellers gave it their all on the dancefloor, looking up only occasionally to check that they weren’t being cheated. This was an amazing gig, in part because what they do is so different to anything you'll ever witness but also because they do it so well.
