No longer content with simply allowing the Stanton Warriors to pick the tunes they play Fabric is asking them to pick the Djs too. With their occasional series of Stanton Sessions the powers that be have decided to simply hand over the keys to the duo and allow them to fill the place with whoever they want - a policy that seems to be paying off.
On April 4th they chose Big Daddy Kane, Alexxxchange, Devlin & Darko, Sick Rick and Lady Waks. Now I am the first to say the word ‘legend’ is one that is overused but to use any other to describe Kane would be insulting; he took the place by storm. The mere sight of him on stage had the place going crazy and I’m pretty sure he could have kept going till 6 all on his own. All the same he brought a few friends along to help; none other than Marley Marl and the Rock Steady Crew, who popped to show their support, and Keith Murray who erupted onto stage mid way into Kane’s set and formed an integral part of it.
Now Fabric is a club used to big crowds, big names and big tunes but even so its rare you see so much energy in the place.
Alexxxchange and Devlin & Darko are of course Spank Rock who, having just released their very own Fabric mix (Fabric Live 33), were on top form with their blend of Baltimore house, filthy synths, rap and deep electro. Lady Waks did her bit representing the world of Russian breakbeat while Sick Rick got everything warmed up nicely.
One wide eyed clubber described the night to me as ‘pure beat paradise‘.
Despite having chosen the line up the Stanton Warriors weren’t let off their own Djing duties and played a stomping mix of hip hop infused breaks with the occasional bit of Miami Bass thrown in for good measure. It is easy to see why they are in such demand.
The Warriors have their own Fabric album out (Fabric Live 30) and will be back in the East London club on May 11th this time joined by Adam Freeland, DJ Yoda & Dan Greenpeace, Krafty Kuts, Nextman and Scratch Perverts.
