On ‘Introvert Me’, ‘Vitamin A’s opener, Pyrelli spits “Its about brandishing all sides cos I’m not one dimensional,” - be it in his music or life at large one thing the 24 year old can’t be accused of is one dimensionality. He mixes grime, hip hop and funk with club R&B, he wants to keep it street but makes no bones about chasing paper and putting out commercial cuts and, as well as having his own record label, he also works in Clarks (yes the shoe shop) in Haringey.
Pyrelli first attracted attention as a member of the North London collective One when MOBO fame beckoned in the final stages of the Unsung competition; victory remained illusive however and the group eventually parted ways. Soldiering on alone solo success came with the Sway collaboration ’Up Your Speed’ and a tour with Dizzee Rascal soon followed.
“It deals with the street side of things but also the more commercial side of me too. I like gangster music, that’s part of what I do, but I also like the stuff that I can dance to as well,” is Pyrelli’s take on the album and a fair one at that. Tracks such as ‘Can’t Be Asked’ and ’Do Not Disturb’ seem to be chasing club play while ‘Twist of Fate’, with its budget horror backing, is all about keeping it street. ‘Caravan of Love’ goes for the Cameo style funk vibe and ‘Caribbean Love’, the album’s most imaginative track, mixes up some calypso samples with a pounding beat and screeching melodies.
Pyrelli’s lazy style of rapping is easy to appreciate but the production on ‘Vitamin A: A Twist of Fate’ lets him down - it provides a glimpse of what he has to offer but hints that there is better to come.
