With , and similarly Cherry, we have an artist looking to commercially conquer with something that's got a bit more substance than some of the other tracks that emerge from female artists in their late teens.
Naila can rhyme and rhyme well. And though their might be some comparison's between her voice and Missy Elliot's (though can she sing as well as Missy?), there is a confidence and justified arrogance to her rhyming that pulls you into the tracks on this Hip pop single.
Lead track ‘La La La' comes in two different formats - a main mix and a part 2. The Main mix is what will be heading for the charts. Swings well and gets your head nodding, all the while permeated by the hooky ‘La La La' and Nailas confident rap. Part two contains the Bhangra influenced beats that Missy Elliott introduced us to with Get Ur Freak On, and gives a slightly different rhyming style than the main mix; although the similarities between ‘Part Two' and ‘Get Ur Freak On' in terms of feel do start to creep in.
These are well produced tracks aimed squarely at a commercial audience. Both mixes of La La La are a bit ‘heard it before', but if you're going to break a new artist then give the public something they can relate to. ‘Game Locked' at the end of the single is a superb slice of Neptunes influenced production, again hooky with Naila sticking one finger up through her cocky rhyming. Whilst La La La seems to aim for teen audience, Game Locked introduces us to a more mature sounding rhyme which will hopefully make an interesting artist to watch. How about a Roots Manuva collaboration?
‘La La La' is out now on La Boss Records.
