Music Reviews Artist: MIMSTitle: This is Why I’m HotLabel: EMI MusicWebsite: http://www.myspace.com/mimsfanclub
Great track, shame about the rapper . . .
"This is Why I’m Hot" harks back to hip hop’s old school; it’s a skeletal tune with a simple, well produced, highly addictive beat. It’s the kind of track you would go crazy to if it was DMX rapping over the top; the only problem is, that it isn’t.
To hold your own over such a stripped down track you need imaginative lyrics, vocal flow or raw passion in your voice – Mims offers none. The line “This is Why I’m Hot” is hardly new and “I can sell a mill saying nothing on a track” seems to sum up his approach. There is nothing particularly wrong with his style its just that he doesn’t do enough.
Aside from the disappointing MC the single is well produced and even features a snippet of the Leon Haywood sample used by Dr Dre on "Aint Nothing but a ‘G’ Thing", and a little bit of something that sounds like Bone Thugs. The b-side throws in a bit of Cham and Junior Reid as well as some deep reggae samples.
Despite its failing "This is Why I’m Hot" reached the top spot in the US charts – it is released here on May 21st.
