Reviews Hip Hop and RnB
Sunday, 24 September 2006

Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, or Lupe Fiasco as he's probably better known as, has been causing quite a bit of a stir and has the backing of some very powerful hip hop types such as Kanye West, Pharrell and Jay-Z. The latter, who may or may not be retired from rapping and bling wearing duties, is credited as executive producer of o the Chicago native's debut album, Food & Liquor. We assume the title is nothing to do with his love for cookery programmes, but that has yet to be confirmed.

It does have to be said though that it's pretty hard to get excited about rap music these days especially if the survival of the genre depends on rappers such as 50 Cent.  It's a icky world of ‘if you don't like the music that's On because we've got trainers, a clothing line and a movie coming near you soon'.    All hope is on Lupe, but quite frankly, things can't get any worse than they are now.

Hurt Me Soul is our protagonist juggling his love of hip hop with its negative influence. American Terrorist has him asking: "How do you forgive the murderer of your father?/The ink of a scholar is worth a thousand times more than the blood of a martyr" to a provocatively Middle Eastern inspired hook. It's obviously a moment of reflection for the American Muslim. A decent debut, but whether he has actually contributed something new to hip hop will remain to be seen.

An amazing album and break thru artist!
What a breathe of fresh air!!
this is a serious album from a serious artist!
the best thing I have heard in years - real hip-hop going back to it's roots - giving something back to the people and the people's issues! keep on educating Lupe!! I can't wait for further material...
p.s. check out this brother's freestyles (blow your head-off type stuff!!)
