When speaking of her musical mentors Keisha White talks of the three A’s; Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys and Anita Baker, and the influence of each is clear in her new album ‘Out of My Hands’ which was released earlier this month. Keisha is being touted as the new British soul sensation and it is easy to see why with her powerful voice and sultry tones. She is the daughter of a professional singer and is therefore acutely aware of the need to be distinctive in what is such a cut throat industry. "I learnt how important it is that music should be distinctive. Whether their songs (Aretha, Alicia, Anita‘s) were played twenty years ago, today or in 2010, they’re timeless and that’s what I’m aspiring to do - make music that lasts forever. I want to help bring back something that has been almost lost for so long - great singing, live instruments and first-rate songs."
These are big aims, especially considering the influx of other ’new soul sensations’ (think Terri Walker, Keisha Cole, etc.) that have emerged recently but ‘Out of My Hands’ shows that Keisha is capable of achieving what she wants. While the soul ballads sound strained at times, her true talents are revealed in more upbeat numbers such as recent single, "Don’t mistake me." This is clearly an album that will make a lot of people stand up and take notice– while it is highly enjoyable my feeling is the best of Keisha White is still to come.
