Music Reviews Artist: Joy DenalaneTitle: Change feat. Lupe FiascoLabel: Four Music/NesolaWebsite: http://www.myspace.com/joydelanemusic
It takes just a few seconds of Joy Denalane’s voice to know that she is someone we will be hearing a lot more of. She has already been compared to Mary J, Faith Evans, Lauren Hill and Syleene Johnson but her blend of hip-hop soul is more than just a carbon copy of those that have come before her.
Denalane’s voice is smooth, powerful and lingering, she writes intelligent lyrics and has an eye for good collaborators. Her previous single ‘Haven or Hell’ featured Rakewon and this one sees her join forces with Lupe Fiasco, who’s simple style of delivery goes well with her emotional tones. It is an upbeat, simply produced nu-soul production, a tale of overcoming adversity and a highly addictive listen.
Denalane is not, as you might expect, the product of America’s mid-west but the daughter of an South African father and German mother. Her first fully English album ‘Born & Raised’ will be released alongside the single on June 18th.
