How good does a band have to be to release a double CD B-sides collection after only two studio albums? Better than the Gorillaz. Amusingly (and accurately) named ‘D-sides’, this album features ideas and works in progress. Many tracks feature recognisable melody lines in their primordial form put to a Casio keyboard drum track: for instance, ‘People’, the early version of ‘Dare.’
Lyrics are used as Polyfilla, stopping gaps and filling spaces. The track ‘Hong Kong’ meanders along to insulting plinky-plonk Chinglish strings. Damon wails ‘the DJ was the last to leave… she had well conditioned hair’ and ‘I can see junk boats.’ (Well, of course you can see junks- you’re in Hong Kong.)
