Yoda is quite simply one of the best DJs around, and its not just me that seems to think so. Q Magazine dubbed him one of “10 DJ’s you must see before you die” and Hip Hop Connection place in him in their “Top three DJs in the world” - if your still not convinced just ask any of those lucky enough to have squeezed into Brixton’s Plan B last Friday.
Yoda treated the crowd to three hours of his trademark musical mayhem flitting between underground rap, hip hop classics, TV theme tunes, drum n’ bass, reggae, soul, nursery rhymes and even a bit of country. He is very much the internet generation’s DJ rarely playing more than a few minutes of any one track and constantly drawing your attention back in. His turntable skills have been chronicled on a string of mix-tapes but on this occasion it was the music that did the talking. Scattered glimpses of his scratching were enough to realise that he is something special but it was a Friday, time to party not to watch someone hunched over the decks.
Yoda brings a welcome dose of comedy to the hip hop world. He’ll have you bouncing, smiling incessantly and sometimes wondering why you are dancing to “Tears for Fears” or the theme from “Trapdoor” - and why you can’t stop.
Having got a glimpse into what I was missing I am now rather embarrassed to admit this was my first taste of Plan B, needless to say I will be going back for more. Cast your eyes over the next few weeks’ line-up and you will see the brains behind the club know what they’re doing; A Skillz has just announced a regular slot, Norman Jay will be there on May 4th, DJ Cash Money on the11th . . . Good music, reasonable prices, friendly atmosphere and not even a hint of pretentiousness - what more do you want?
Yoda’s first artist album “The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda” is out now and he is currently touring the UK.
