In the already overpopulated genre that is hip-hop and rap even the most ardent fan wouldn’t recognise a name or two. This is why I was surprised to read that ‘Two/Three’ is Dabrye’s second album and was highly anticipated after the critical success of the first.
Tadd Mullinix from Michigan is a rapper but he doesn’t create music that we would come to expect from one. He explores the beats of hip-hop whilst combining it with electro and elements of jazz, the result being an original and interesting album in a genre on its own.
Standouts among the 20 tracks include "That’s What’s up", "Nite Eats Day"
and the instrumentals "Tell Dem" and "Bloop". Whilst most rappers are content with releasing tracks and videos that the public have seen time and time again, Dabrye actually creates instead of sampling, something that the high profile hip-hop stars should try once in a while.
