It seems that Atlanta is the place to go if you want a new rap group or solo artist. The city has become a breeding ground for hip-hop stars since the murders of the East and West Coast kings in the 90s.
D4L was founded in 2003 and enjoyed underground success on that side of the pond but it was “Laffy Taffy” that brought them mainstream acknowledgement.
The single made US chart history in January when it beat Kanye West to achieve the biggest selling download of a single track.
On top of the never ending influx of new rappers that pollutes Tim Westwood’s radio show on a regular basis, there always seems to be a new type of sound to go along with it. “Laffy Taffy” has a unique sound that doesn’t contain the hard bass that you would expect from a rap single. I foolishly assumed that it was ‘crunk’ only to find out that this is the new party sound called ‘snap’, which shows that even an avid MTV Base watching 20 year old such as myself is capable of being out of touch.
Whilst D4L may score points for the originality of their sound, unfortunately their lyrics are so bad that they make 50 Cent look like Maya Angelou. The song gets really annoying thanks to the ridiculous title and I don’t know how anyone could dance to it, even after a few sambuccas.
