In an industry that is swamped with everyone trying to be different from the latest one hit wonder, arrives a surprise contender for the original status. , a 19 year old solo artist who seems to have become an overnight success. Her Debut album entitled Chain Letter is a 15 track guilty pleasure at its best. The appeal has to be the sheer eclectic quality that manifests its way through each track and qualifies as one of the most diverse long players I have heard. From the aggressive, yet comical starter “Girlfight” to this year’s ode to Kelis’s caught out there, “I want you dead”, each track plays a sublime tribute to Brooke’s exceptional vocal range. Top this off with a hard edgy attitude that comes like a melting pot of the aforementioned Kelis and Outkast mixed together with Pink at her rockiest.
Chain Letter is an album that showcases just the radical production that the industry is being cheated of. Escaping from the predictable timberland or Neptune beats that we are tiring of, and hitting us hard with a fresh take on RnB is what this album is all about.
The originality showcased on this album is an automatic plus, however, my only concern is that Brooke may fall into the black bottomless hole of predicable pretty enough, talented enough female artists who are not receiving their due appreciation. There are far too many stand out tracks on this debut that should catapult Brooke into the musical conscious of us all. This is not an album to be closed minded about, enjoy the originality and the hardcore attitude. This is radical enough to be original and original enough to be radical. This is one chain letter that we should all be taking part in!
