Brighton’s Black Grass, better known as Mex, is back with new single Don’t Leave Me This Way, taken from the forthcoming and hotly-tipped new album A Hundred Days In One. You’d be right in guessing that Don’t Leave Me This Way is a cover (of sorts) of the classic 70s disco hit of the same name. Apparently Mex penned the track whilst waiting for a session player to show up and the lyrics came to him in a flash. Dominique Noiret of alt-country band She Said delivered the vocals in one take at the studio with astoundingly accomplished results. Mex’s description of himself as a “witches brew of styles” is a pretty succinct stab at sketch of his style – the rhythm harks back to the height of trip hop but the track is fairly melancholy, pretty surprising in the light of the stomping disco original. Remix-wise, J Star contributes a dubby re-rub that is perfect for summertime skanking and an instrumental version of the very same remix and the original that’ll have the DJs amongst you grinning so broadly that your face will be practically unrecognisable. Maybe. Additional track Down & Dirty which features the vocal talents of up-and-coming UK MC extraordinaire Micall Parknsun (sic) is a nice bonus, though much more of a traditional hip hop track than Don’t Leave Me This Way.
