Music Reviews Artist: BeezwaxTitle: Presents: Sting OperationLabel: Out in the WestWebsite: http://www.outinthewest.com
A quick browse of the tracklist is enough to make any producers thankful of his midi processor and subsequent interest in his work. ‘Sting Operation’ has all the makings of a great album, but does the Out in the West beat machine pull through?
This 15 track album is essentially an instrumental display from Beezwax, whose influences span the continents and draws together a plethora of genres, whilst also addressing the issues that many of today’s youth are subject to in inner city life, and as such touches on poverty, deprivation, violent crime and general disarray that stands in the way of many a council estate resident.
All of which quickly become evident very quickly after hearing the Rodney P samples in the Stylah and Supar Novar track ‘English Kids’, followed quickly with the bassline from ‘Sweet Dreams’ that makes up the musical ensemble for Darkus’ ‘What’s Poppin’ Remix’ alongside Kyza Smirnoff and Triggs.
The tempo is kept up through the next few tracks, the grimey and somewhat Middle-East backdrop to the Sick Sense Cru’s offering ‘Jojo’s’ showing off more talent from Beez’ own camp.
By the mid-point, the mixtape makes for a solid sound, albeit with the occasional slip. And when the sample kicks in that signifies the beginning of the end to the Terra Firma trios contribution, and the beat begins for a Klashnekoff refix to his ‘All I Got’ track, it does seem to take a downward turn.
Maybe due to comparison to the original, but there is something not quite right about the linking of the two articles. The Hackney man seems to have had the energy sucked out of his generally upbeat and heavyweight lyrics, which sit more comfortably on the faster tempo and more prevalent bass hits.
Thankfully, this hiccup is remedied with a sharp slap to the back and the insertion of the ‘House Of The Rising Sun’ foundation to ‘Dead Stranger’, which even more worryingly is overshadowed by the early 20th century style withering string ensemble that forms the treble of ‘Pain Music’, with the verbal stylings of Mr Triggs and SAS’s Mayhem.
The album, as a grouping, does throw up a few duds, tracks which quickly become a skipaholics wet dream, but similarly tracks like Taurus’ ‘On Guard’, Genesis Elijah’s Pimp Principle Refix’ and ‘English Kids’ should keep you entertained enough to at least give the rest a chance.
Beezwax Presents Sting Operation is out 25th June on Out in the West Records.
