Music Reviews Artist: Baby JTitle: Fix The Problem Mixtape
Baby J – for the uninitiated – is a Derby-based producer responsible for arguably the two best songs ('Fuck The Hook' and 'No Big Ting') on arguably the best ever UK hip hop album (Skinnyman's 'Council Estate Of Mind'). However, his new mixtape – Fix The Problem – is a showcase not only for his own beats, but also for the vocal talents of 65 different MCs, who are each given about a minute to captivate the listener with their finest vocal fireworks.
While Baby J's production on this record doesn't quite live up to the work he's done with Skinnyman and Yogi, there are still some very strong moments. The mixtapes's musical highlight comes in the form of a thumping, up-tempo ska-tinged offering, which samples 'Gangsters' by The Specials.
Aside from Baby J's beats, the variety of rappers on display is the most appealing thing about this record. J2K and Jehst; Asher D and the Dirty Diggers; Yungun and Skibadee – these are pairings that you're unlikely to find anywhere else. The only slightly disappointing aspect of this veritable cameo-fest is that is that there's no real surprises. Throughout the entire hour it's almost always the best-known rappers who shine the brightest. Yungun, Loudmouth and Jehst (who double-times deftly over a much grimier tempo than he's used to) are the stars of the show, with Shameless, Rukus and Karizma hot on their tails.
So, while 'Fix The Problem' may not represent Baby J's best work, it's certainly a decent appetite-whetter for his forthcoming studio album, 'Baby Food', which is due in October this year.
