After a much publicised and overrated beef with Kanye West, hip hop mogul 50 Cent finally releases his third major label album “Curtis” on Interscope records. Judging by the amount of publicity “Curtis” has received, despite the album being available to journalists and other media heads only a few days ahead of its release, Fiddy must have endured sleepless nights to craft his third and maybe final masterpiece to excellence. Why? To save his career of course; not that he’s had much competition. Having listened to “Graduation” a couple of days ago, I can duly announce that Fiddy will win the war; in fact, I’ll bet my job on it.
Littered with catchy lyrical hooks and bags of collaborations with pin-ups such as Mary J and Robin Thicke (not forgetting the magnificent Justin Timberlake on the robotic, star trek enthused ode ‘Ayo Technology’), “Curtis” succeeds in doing what most hip hop albums fail to do – sound appealing! Infusing an array of genres, the album has a vibrant and eclectic sound which may confuse mainstream listeners – that’s Fiddy. Despite an almost failed attempt on trying to make “Curtis” appealing to addressees of most genres, some tracks do work well including “Fire” ft Nicole Scherzinger and Young Buck. Akon makes a snazzy appearance on the album as well as Eminem and Timberland. Shove that up your pipe and smoke it Kanye!
