Music Reviews Artist: Nina Miranda & Chris Frank present . . .Title: ZeepLabel: Far Out RecordingsWebsite: http://www.myspace.com/zeepband
Do you remember the Levis advert from a few years back with the mermaids and the incredibly sexy 'Underwater Love' song? Ever find yourself wondering what happened to 'Smoke City' - the guys behind that track? Well I can reveal the answer.
Zeep is the latest concoction to be dreamt up by Nina Miranda & Chris Frank both of whom were involved in two of Brazil's biggest selling acts of the past decade - Smoke City and Da Lata. Comparisons to Bebel Gilberto will almost certainly abound but that can be put down to Nina's breathy, sexy vocals rather than musical style. Thankfully they avoid the 'lounge' sound that seems to attract so many Brazilians keen to impress in Europe, and instead opt for a deeper, funkier, soulful feel.
The album is almost exclusively sung in English, the one exception being the Bjorkesque 'Aqua' and its Portuguese vocals. The music has a distinctly Brazilian flavour. The beats come courtesy of European atmospheric elctronica and Brazil's African inspired drumming, the magic however is provided by the clever use of the samba guitar, carefully crafted percussion and the enchanting sound of the cuica.
The album is one that evolved over years of ad hoc jamming sessions rather than careful planning, Miranada and Frank are partners in life as well as music and most of the band are close friends - all of which shines through in the music. Chris describes 'Zeep' as "more folky" and "more organic" than anything he's done before, and he's probably right.
The fact that recording took place in both Rio and London is also evident as scruffy samba samba and folksy rock blend perfectly. With Zeep Far Out Recordings continue to set the standard for contemporary Brazilian music.
