If you’ve ever watched Trisha, you will know the situation I mean. Two youths, clad in fakes, sit either side of a rather overweight teenage girl and argue over which one of them is the father of the poor girls baby. As you sit and wonder how the pregnancy occurred, spare this thought; there’s a strong possibility of the miraculous conception happening to a sound track of . is a 3 CD set of what is more commonly known as Happy Hardcore. At the turn of the nineties, dance music began to get snobby and branch off into the multitude of factions we have today, Hardcore was one such faction; it was simple in so much as it was the house music that had been kicking around for years, with a bit more speed in it (literally.) Core to early Hardcore was the influence of Italian piano house coupled with speeded up break beats from producers who liked their beats less refined than the creeping influence of New York and Chicago garage. Labels such as suburban Base flourished. Hardcore started to go over ground. But after its initial national popularity, Hardcore started to go back underground and eventually develop into jungle then drum and bass. Happy Hardcore seems to be a convenient tag for those producers who didn’t want to go down the D&B path. It is therefore interesting that the genre of Happy Hardcore is still in such effect; as this compilation will show, its transcended the passing genres of dance music and stuck to its guns; fast breaks, Hip Hop influences, techno sounds and tinkly toy pianos.
Each CD is mixed by a different DJ, each a stalwart of the scene. Although the central vein running through each CD is energy and speed, each offer their own take on the Genre; DJ Seduction’s mix is darker in sound, mixing more techno sounds with ridiculously fast breaks. Stu Allan’s mix is also dark in sound but with more vocal led tracks over four to the floor and Robbie Longs mix sees the Italio-house influence. Musically it’s so intense in speed that it feels unbearable with out a bucketful of drugs and is not to be encouraged after five espressos as it feels like your heart would have to give up on you. conjures up images of bad drugs, bad second hand cars with more body kits than Joan Collins, and bad nightclubs in my hometown of Blackpool. However, genuine scenes and musical tribes are hard to find nowadays and the Happy Hardcore scene is a law to itself. Some of the tracks on this aren’t massively removed in style to some of my old Stu Allen mixtapes when he hosted a radio show in the early nineties, demonstrating how firm the genre has stayed over the years in an increasingly fickle industry. Like Guinness, it’s a massively acquired taste. Rating: 1/5
