While on the subject of mashup’s and the general philosophy of taking inspiration from the past, two main schools of thought currently exist. Firstly comes the notion that the blending together of songs suggests a lack of inspiration, musical unoriginality and regressive thinking, a la Puff Daddy. Secondly comes the contrary argument that dusty old retro tracks can be given a contemporary sheen, and in turn re-worked, re-modelled and re-invigorated. The writer’s own personal feeling is that no music as such is sacred. If you want to put a house beat on Can or a hip hop break on ’Stairway to Heaven’, hey feel free. However if you insist on going down this route, make sure you either bring something different to the table or at least enhance the original, otherwise what’s the point?. Thus Trashcan Jack’s melding of ’White Wedding’ and ’Is There Anybody Out There’ in theory does an interesting, progressive thing. That is if this sort of thing hadn’t been done countless times before in club’s up and down the country, or even on Hed Kandi’s regular CD’s. In essence the various mixes on the CD don’t do anything wrong, but on the other hand a lack of originality and inspiration seems prevalent. Moreover why re-mix a classic 80’s tune when the original was great in the first place?. Sure hearing a new configuration of Billy Idol with mild Happy Monday’s keyboards catches the ear for about as long as the record lasts, but the chances of staying in the memory banks for anything longer are sadly limited.
