If you’ve seen the film of the same name and were expecting a dose of bouncy teen-angst rock, as I was, then ‘Roadtrip’ has some surprises in store. It’s the first UK offering from Petrol Records set up by Australian Music exec Chris Murphy with the aim of ‘bringing together meticulously styled and synchronised music from the planet’s most culturally diverse sounds’ or something along those line. In essence it’s a sometimes melancholic, always monotonous fest of 80’s electronica – the perfect drive time soundtrack some would have you believe.
The album is a collection of new takes on old classics form Thriller Jill’s spaced out rendition of Elton John’s ‘Rocket Man’ to Neimo’s reved up take on Lou Reed’s ‘Vicious’. My own personal favourite is the Atom’s bizarre and almost uplifting version of ‘Waiting in Vain’ by Bob Marley and The Wailers. This is the type of CD I imagine listening to on the way back from a killer roadtrip; its not fun enough for the trip itself but perfect for the comedown on the journey home.
