Music Reviews Artist: Radio SlaveTitle: Misch MaschLabel: Fine Records
Radio Slave is the prolific Matt Edwards A/K/A Rekid, Quiet Village, Matthew E, Sea Devils. His deft studio touch has made him one of the most in-demand remixers working today, who has turned his remixing talents to DJ Hell, Kylie Minogue (where he famously mixed Kylie with New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’), Carl Craig, Talking Heads, Chicken Lips, Pet Shop Boys and even Kate Bush. Last year alone he put out over 20 remixes under his various aliases.
Particularly as a result of his work as Rekid, Matt Edwards has broken down barriers of dance music – house, broken beat, techno, electro, hip-hop, disco cut-ups. This mix for ‘Misch Mash’ is the fourth in the series and follows on in similar vein to DJ Hell’s effort in focusing on a minimal, stark, savage funk, with shearing digital noises over-pinning sharp percussive noises and deep tones.
Disc 1 follows a linear theme with eight Radio Slave productions keeping pace with the minimal techno of Deetron, Andromat 300 and Vivanco. He also slips in the re-hot Villalobos remix of Shackleton's 'Blood on My Hands'. The attention never wavers as Radio Slave’s skill is subtle blending followed by abrupt cut-outs and thundering drops. Often stark, this clinical machine music is heady stuff and not for the faint-hearted.
Disc 2 is unmixed and includes six more Radio Slave remixes of tracks by Carl Craig, X-Press 2 , M.A.N.D.Y vs Booka Shade (14 minutes worth!) , Pet Shop Boys, Moby, Cagedbaby, and Jamelia. This disc has a more evolving, relaxed feel with each track unfolding over its full length providing a more rewarding experience with slow builds and subtle but relentless funk coming to the fore.
Overall, for those looking for the softer more soulful productions characterised by his work as Rekid, this may be a bit too hard, but for those that like their mix CD’s to replicate nights spent on dark, sweaty, pumping dance-floors, then this is up your street.
Radio Slave ’Misch Masch’ is released on Fine Records on June 11, 2007
