Music Reviews Artist: Pirate Robot MidgetTitle: 'Its My Beat Now'Label: Hell YeahWebsite: http://www.piraterbotmidget.com
One for the club/after-party rather than Sunday afternoon listening, this is dirty, grinding filthy electro.
Pirate Robot Midget (PMD) is an Italian French electro-rock outfit based in Amsterdam, in part, inspired by the city's chaotic nature. And the force of chaos is strong in this one; twisted baselines are mixed with punk riffs and what appears to be all the electro fx they could find.
The highlight of the 5-track EP is 'Sacrum' and its screeching keyboards, broken beats and scratchy, miss-matched feel. 'So Undead' meanwhile is disappointing, it provides a break from the grittiness of the rest of the CD but the spacey, synth heavy bounce offers nothing new.
The rest of the EP is taken up with 'Its My Beat Now' with mixes from Riva Starr and Dyno, and the original with vocals from Grand Agent. The original is the one for fans of dirty electro and the Dyno mix for the minimalists; the Riva Starr take lagging somewhere behind the two.
The likes of Justice and Simian Mobile Disco are clear influences on PMD, yet they have a lot more prove to achieve similar status.
