, undoubtedly one of the hardest working men in the dance music business, is back with another compilation of his favourite tunes that spans funky house and harder hitting electro material alongside several re-workings of commercial tracks. The compilation is divided into two CDs, each with 14 tracks. Amongst some of the predictable bits and pieces (I think have all heard more than enough of Chanel’s ‘My Life’ and Bob Sinclar’s ‘Love Generation’), there are some real gems that shine amongst the aforementioned rough.
In particular, Steve Mac’s mix of Jamiroquai’s ‘Seven Days in Sunny June’ is a bright and breezy reminder of summer now that the winter months are closing in. It retains all the former beauty of the original adding an uplifting fast pace and some nice echo that turns the track’s danceabilty up a couple of notches. Faithless, U2, The Killers, Mylo and Goldfrapp are amongst the diverse artists who feature on this compilation – all of them remixed by big players from the dance music field. The result is a compilation that appeals to dance fans as well as pop music fans. In fact, it seems Mr Tong has taken a leaf out of the 2 Many DJs book since his selection of tunes taps into that ‘Oh-my-Gawd-I-recognise-this-but-it-sounds-different’ category of DJing. That style is a dead cert for getting a student-populated crowd going and at the same time, it is what makes the undisputed master of compiling CDs whose purpose is to provide the sonic wallpaper to getting ready for a night out. I strongly recommend this CD for exactly that purpose alone. Rating: 4/5
