The opening bars of 'Yuri' promise Manu Chao like mayhem but what follows is in a rather different vein. Take a Russian dancing band, large amounts of vodka and someone who is clearly inspired by the likes of Daft Punk, Air and Bjork, and you may well end up with 'Yuri'.
'Yuri' is the first single taken from their eponymous album and is an ode to the famous Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. It is eccentric pop driven by electric vocals and Russian marching sounds. It is all rather crazy though undeniably infectious.
Oi Va Voi have been through some tough times so it is good to see they still know how to have fun. They were dumped by guest vocalist KT Tunstall, thwarted by illness and almost ripped apart by internal squabbling.
Their latest offering may not have been quite as well received as 'Laughter Through Tears' but singles like 'Yuri' show they still have a lot to offer.
