Next up from the critically appreciated ‘Destroy Rock & Roll’ album is ‘Muscle Car’. Rather electro in sound and descriptive in beefy cars, this song wouldn’t sound out of place as the sound track for a late 80’s documentary on Miami Beach.
The bass riff distinctly informs you that this is the same guy who dropped the pressure some months back, and the monotonous, camp, and slightly robotic female vocals ensure a regular spot on MTV dance. An air of have I heard this before fills the room on first scoping, but one must expect familiarity when divulging into the retro electro Ol’ Skool – Nu Skool type genre. That’s not to the disparagement of this track though; all the right ingredients are ready in the mix. The bass-line is huge, the beats are infectious and without a doubt it’s another dance-floor demolisher. The only real criticism is in the song arrangement; the track never seems to return to the enormity of the first sixteen bars, which quite literally tear the disco balls off the ceiling. After this segment the track never quite peaks to the level you know it could do.
