In common with many of the more discerning Detroit-infused techno artists, Laurent Garnier has flirted heavily with jazz, gradually moving from sample-based keys into employing live instruments and horn sections. This release now takes things a step forward, being seven tracks of live, free-flowing improvisation which were recorded whilst the ensemble were on the festival circuit last summer – there are two live video tracks of the band in full flow.
Showing his versatility, all tracks were composed and performed by Garnier alongside keyboardists Bugge Wesseltoft and Benjamin Rippert as well as saxophonist and long-time collaborator Philippe Nadaud. The aim was to capture a 70s improvised jazz feel and this is achieved most notably on a storming, free-wheeling version of ‘Man with the red face’. Detroit techno stylings as well as heavier drum and bass beats do feature, but the emphasis is placed most heavily on the instruments. In this way, the recordings are similar in feel to the Detroit Experiment work of Carl Craig.
This album is about an evolution of machine music, returning to its human roots , becoming a composite of both.
