Music Reviews Artist: Funk Mundial #3Title: Crookers feat. Mc Leka + Mc DandãoLabel: Man RecordingsWebsite: http://www.manrecordings.com/
With 'Funk Mundial #3' Man Recordings continues on its mission of converting the world to the ways of baile funk, baile crunk and speed baile.
This time its the turn of Italian duo Crookers to provide their take on the baile phenomenon; they're joined by former Proibidão MC, Leka, and MC Dandão from the favela Vila Lagé in Rio. They're glitchy electro, crunky house provides a fitting backdrop for the raw sound of the baile funk Mcs.
Backed by a seductive bassline 'Para de Graçinha’ sees Leka taunt a local player for his feeble moves and small wallet, while the dirtier ‘Soca Ali Baba’ mixes thumping house with flashes of baile beats and Dandão's edgy Mcing. Finally ’Atomic Baile Boy’ provides a vocal free bass heavy view of funk carioca.
Rather than simply trying to recreate the sounds of Brazil's urban ghettoes the Funk Mundial series adds a distinctly European twist. They mash together elements of baile funk with ones that are more familiar to the European ear. Perhaps One Week To Live put it best when they dubbed it "Schizophrenic Brazilian-infused thug house!"
