Music Reviews Artist: Franz & ShapeTitle: The Man Who Paid Before RemixesLabel: RelishWebsite: http://www.franzandshape.com/
Now part of me, the cynical part, can’t help thinking this is merely a clever ploy to make more money out of fans of Franz & Shape’s much hyped Acceleration and Relish Compilation albums - the rest of me admits that’s probably at least partly true but then again if its good music who cares?
The single features two new takes on The Man Who Paid Before from the Relish EP and a remix of Tightropes from the Acceleration album.
The first Man Who Paid mix comes courtesy of Riot in Belgium (Benny Single and Joel Dickson) and goes for the stomping, dirty, bass heavy vibe. The second is provided by London based producer Tronik Youth (Neil Pameil) and goes for a completely different sound; spacey, retro disco punctuated with melodic synths and some vocoder vocal action.
The Riot in Belgium mix is definitely the one to listen to before you go out, the Tronik Youth mix when you get back.
Squeezed in between the two is Kissy Sell Out’s take on Tightropes. The skills of the East London whiz kid have been called upon by Gwen Stefani and All Saints, and here he goes for a complete reworking of the track. Gone are the 80s vocals of the album version replaced by an array of electronic sounds. A rolling, rather chaotic, baseline provides the backbone over which lawyers of keyboards, stuttering bouncy beats and mish maps of other electronic sounds are laid down.
Franz & Shape are the Italian deejay/producer Francesco Spazzoli and the sound engineer Chris Shape and the single is out on June 4th throughHeadman/Manhead's label Relish Records.
