When one mentions the words ‘Four tet’ a series of adjectives instantaneously come to mind; bewitching yet euphoric, experimental yet controlled. ‘Pockets’ is five minutes and thirty one seconds of enticingly dark electronic beats mixed in with that oh so sentimental fussion jazz beat that so often, and so willingly causes us to drift away.
‘Pockets’ ,the latest single from Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) has been especially created for the soon approaching ‘DJ Kicks’ compilation. On this track, along with many other reoccurring characteristics, it is the customary faint murmur of human voices, together with the increasing intensity of layered resonance that reassures us that Four Tet will once again undoubtedly please the crowds. Nevertheless he still surprises us with the subtle innovations and changes of mood that occur in each new tune.
Will his layers of electronically driven samples ever get tiresome? Perhaps. However ‘Pockets’ with it’s built up chorus, dominated by an amalgam of mellow chimes and xylophones, seems to have achieved a successfully soothing equilibrium between inconsistent rhythms and sonic melody.
