Modern day dance tracks seem to be built on the sample of a classic which is probably why most people who don’t holiday in Spain as well as those too old for Club 18 – 30 can’t stand dance music. Once upon a time, “superstar DJ’s” used to come up with their own tunes or at least sample something unusual or unheard of. Alas those days don’t exist anymore and the label that brought us Hi – Tracks ‘Say Say Say’ has got another sampled club banger under their sleeve.
This time The Police’s track “Message in a Bottle” gets the Ministry of Sound treatment and despite the fact that I am a massive fan of Sting and The Police, I don’t hate this track as much as I thought I would.
The reason why this song works where some other attempted club anthems have failed is because Filterfunk keeps the essence of what made “Message in a Bottle” a hit in the 80s in the first place. It keeps Sting’s voice in tact as well as the guitar strings that carry the song as well as the vocals.
Although it will never top the original, that isn’t the point or the aim of this track. It cleverly keeps the song as Sting intended it to be whilst making it an unlikely club tune. Should’ve been awful but is somehow wonderful, other DJs take note.
