The first thing to be said about Basement Jaxx’ latest offering is what a fantastic title; the name ‘Cray Itch Radio’ conjures up images of music so infectiously funky that standing still is not an option. While the album itself may not quite live up to such an image it nevertheless shows that these dance music heavy weights have still got something to give, some rather funky.
The album is an eclectic mish mash of sounds and sultry ‘Radio Itch’ voiceovers are inter-woven throughout and carefully employed to add an element of continuity . ’Crazy Itch’ begins with operatic crescendo and proceeds to flitter between the sleek and sexy sounds of tracks such as ‘Hush Boy’ and the country infused ‘Take me back to your house’.
Basement Jaxx have long been known for their refusal to remain within the confounds of any one musical genre and ‘Crazy Itch’ is no exception. It bounces between the R&B tinged ‘Hush Boy’, strangely reminiscent of the likes J-Lo and the king of sexy himself Mr Timberlake, the ‘banjo-house’ sound of ‘Take me back to your house’ and the grimey carnival rhythms of ‘Run 4 cover‘. and ’Everybody’. In addition ‘Hey U’ will provide many with their first taste of Balkan folk ,courtesy of Swedish Pop sensation Robyn while ‘Everyone’ somehow manages to mix grime and electronica with a hint of Bollywood. If that all sounds like a bit much for you rest assured the spacey sounds of ‘Lights go down’ and ’Keep keep on’ provides a perfect post-clubbing backdrop.
‘Crazy Itch may not be Basement Jaxx greatest album to date but it is well produced and shows the duo remain relevant in the ever changing world of dance music.
