Neil Hannon thought of the name “The Divine Comedy” at 18 and whilst members have come and gone, he has remained the main – and sometimes only – creative force behind the title. ‘To Die a Virgin’ is the second single to be released from the acclaimed album ‘Victory For The Comic Muse’, and it only further cements his reputation for creating witty yet sophisticated pop music.
The song begins with an audio sample from a television show I’ve never heard of, which sets the tone for the sharp and incredibly relatable lyrics sung over a beat that intriguingly moulds contrasting sounds together.
Unlike many other songs, this one has a narrative throughout that flows alongside the music perfectly. The story is obviously told from a male perspective but it’s never crass or uncomfortable as it is told in a way that women will be able to relate to. A catchy beat, great lyrics and an effortless vocal performance shows that Hannon is still on the money after all these years.
