Camden’s streets are paved of gold. Seriously they are. Ignore the stench of last nights larger, the disinterested locals, overtly enthusiastic teenage tourists and statutory ageing punks clinging to the streets. For new bands have fun in Camden, and get recognised. Aside to the high street stores currently jostling for space in this once indie-centric haven, no area of London has more gig venues per floor space, than the sensory overload assault and wonderfully bustling area of Camden, North London. Next weekend, amongst a smattering of market stall and suspicious smelling food stands, a mile long stretch of the area is taken over by 2008’s Camden Crawl.
For the discerning fact fan here’s what you get at the Crawl: it’s a music festival slotted perfectly into two days, with over 120 artists housed in no fewer than 25 venues. Compared to the hefty five day love-in of Glastonbury, this really is the no nonsense festival, where on offer is the best variety and quality of new bands for your money, and time. And also for the first time in the Crawl’s seven years, it has flittered perfectly from a mid week slot, to a Friday and Saturday position, just like magic to the ears of fans and bands alike.
Repping up the hotly tipped and breaking artists’ corner, music fans will be treated to a hefty smorgasbord of new talent, consisting of good quality and variety.
Kicking up a storm recently on their UK dates, Crystal Castles are a sure live favourite. Coming up for great thing, the young new folk contingency makes an appearance in the form of, Eugene McGuinness, Noah And The Whale and Lightspeed Champion. If annoying indie pop is your bag, go have a laugh at One Night Only or the overblown stomp of The Fratellis. Destined to deliver one of the most confident and inspiring debut albums of the year, the girl/boy fronted sextet Make Model make an appearance on both days of the Crawl. Also catch Sam Sparro before he edges further into the gigantic realms of popdom.
Elle S’appelle , Hatcham Social and Bobby Cook are the hotly tipped pick of the new bands. With the former offering a shimmy fuelled take on the great British tradition of eccentric pop, and then Hatcham Social increase in quality, confidence and weirdness at every given opportunity. Whilst Bobby Cook just makes you want to throw on your favourite checked shirt and ride a bike through balmy fields. All have a special place reserved in their hearts for beautiful melodies.
More established acts this year making an appearance at the crawl will include the high jink brass fun of The Rumblestrips, the sizzling punk of the Noisettes and sexy ramblings of pop pixie Robyn, who will undoubtedly be showcasing new tunes.
Alongside those destined for big things, surprise guests could make an appearance at any time and at any venue. At previous crawls, Echo AndThe Bunnymen and Moby have appeared, also firm favourites Mogwai, Snow Patrol, Beth Orton, Hard-Fi, Kooks and The Magic Numbers have all trod the floorboards of the Camden Crawl.
So streets of gold it is then, for the music fan who like to run around catching all today’s best new music on the unforgettable streets of Camden.
