Bloc Party have announced that they’ll release a surprise new single after a mystery countdown on their website.

The band gave BBC Radio One presenter Zane Lowe the first play of the new track 'Mercury' on his BBC Radio 1 show last night.

Singer/guitarist Kele Okereke said: 'It's something that we finished a little while ago and we're all really excited about in the Bloc Party camp... So we thought, 'Why wait?' We should give everyone the chance to hear it.'

'Mercury' will be released on 11th August 2008.
