Youth charity, The Prince’s Trust is proud to announce one of the greatest artists of all time, Jay-Z as the headlining star of The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival, presented by UMBRO. The event, in association with Channel 4, will take place at Earl’s Court, London on the weekend of 8th and 9th May 2004. In a rare visit to the UK, universally respected artist and lyricist Jay-Z will lead the UK’s largest ever urban music event. The event will feature a tribute to Jay-Z who recently announced his retirement in the USA. Alicia Keys, Lemar, Dizzee Rascal and Jamelia will join Jay-Z on the billing. Further US and UK artists will be announced in the lead up to the Festival. Fans will be pleased to know that tickets go on sale on Saturday 13th March, details of how to book will be at www.umf.org.uk
The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival will feature the cream of US and UK Hip Hop and R&B artists, as well as some talented newcomers to the scene. The Festival is a unique live event that will present a variety of urban activities such as breakdance/b-boy and MC Battles, DJs, workshops, beatboxing, urban art, an indoor football zone featuring top footballers, and a computer gaming zone. There will also be a platform for unsigned artists to showcase their talent.
Following the success of The Prince’s Trust’s signature music events, including Fashion Rocks and Party In The Park, the UK’s leading charity for young people launches this urban event to engage more young people and promote the many positive routes to success through urban-related activities. Proceeds from the event will be invested in more young people, helping them to reach their goals.
The event already has the support from the music industry from both sides of the pond, including DJ, Trevor Nelson and Russell Simmons, founder of US record label Def Jam.
Trevor Nelson, UK Ambassador for The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival said: “It is fantastic that The Prince’s Trust is supporting urban music and culture on such a large scale and in a way that is totally in touch with young people. There is no other event where you’ll see such big US and UK stars performing alongside underground and unsigned acts. The fact that The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival is attracting the likes of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys is testament to the innovative work The Trust does with young people who have struggled or have faced barriers in their lives.”
Channel 4 will broadcast live from the festival over the whole weekend with T4 presenters June Sarpong and Vernon Kay, with additional programming across the schedule. The event will also be screened internationally.
Neil McCallum, Channel 4’s Editor T4 and Music, added: "Channel 4 is thrilled to be involved in The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival, providing viewers with front row seats to what promises to be one of the year's hottest new music events. The festival extends and reinforces Channel 4's own commitment to developing and showcasing new talent and motivating young people. We’re also delighted to be furthering our involvement with The Prince's Trust following the huge success of last year's Fashion Rocks for The Prince’s Trust."
The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival will reach a live audience of nearly 40,000 people. In addition, a series of live radio shows will be broadcast from the event and backstage.
UMBRO is proud to announce their headline sponsorship of The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival. Adrian Cory, Brand Marketing Director at UMBRO said: “Music and football both engage young people and play a major role in their lives, which is why The Prince’s Trust Urban Music Festival is an ideal event for UMBRO to support. The concept of football as a lifestyle as well as a sport is something that UMBRO is currently exploring and we hope to demonstrate that through our involvement with this event. We are also delighted to be able to support The Prince’s Trust and the fantastic work that they do with young people.”
The Prince’s Trust will be running a special Sound Live (a music-based personal development programme) in the week leading up to the event, to demonstrate how it can help young people to develop confidence and skills through urban music. The group will rehearse throughout the week in preparation for the unique opportunity to perform at the festival. They will also have the chance to meet the top artists and receive performance advice prior to the event.
