The Make Poverty History advertisement, campaigning to end third-world debt has been pulled by Ofcom. The media regulator has banned all UK television adverts after declaring Make Poverty History a political organisation.
The debate started when broadcasters questioned whether the Make Poverty History advertisement that calls on people to lobby the government, should fall into the category of political advertising.
Ofcom ruled that the advert falls within this definition and puts it in the same category as organisations campaigning on issues such as abortion, immigration law and vivisection, which are also prevented from advertising on TV in the UK.
The television ads that were also shown in UK cinemas featured celebrities such as Dizzee Rascal, Madonna and Bob Geldof clicking their fingers every three seconds to symbolise the death of a child.
