Next Monday sees the battle begin between two of the biggest UK music stores - HMV and Virgin Megastore. Both retailers will launch a music download service, hoping to tap into the rapidly growing digital download music market.
To support the launch of the new service HMV has lined up a number of artists to play live at its flagship Oxford Street store next week, including Echo & the Bunnymen and Goldie Lookin' Chain.
Virgin has confirmed it will charge 79p for permanent ownership of individual tracks. It also plans to offer a basic £9.99 monthly subscription that will give access to 1.2m tracks. A monthly subscription of £14.99 will allow users to transfer an unlimited number of tracks to compatible MP3 players. These tracks expire if the monthly subscription is not continued.
HMV will unveil full details of its service on Thursday.
Virgin Digital is set to go live this Friday, followed by HMV DIgital on Monday 5th September.
