Director General of the BBC, Mark Thompson has announced plans for the BBC to sell music on its websites for the very first time. It is expected that the move will make many online retailers nervous, scared of the impact that huge BBC audiences will have on their business.
It is also likely that the BBC will face criticism for being a public service broadcaster that is exploiting commercial opportunities. However, it could be argued that the growth and increased popularity of the internet and other forms of digital media is blurring the boundaries between public service and commercial revenues and without the bold moves that Thompson is advocating, the BBC risks falling behind in the digital age.
