The BBC has announced plans to spend more than £1 million on launching a daily Asian soap opera on its digital radio station, 'BBC Asian Network'.
The new show, which is due to launch on May 24th 2004, will be called 'Silver Street' and will broadcast Monday-Friday in ten-minute episodes. An omnibus edition will also be aired at weekends.
Gordon House, had of radio drama at the BBC said:
"I'm delighted that the BBC is showing its commitment to the Asian Network by commissioning a radio soap across the week.. t's going to be realistic, dramatic and – I hope – great entertainment! We want it to become a fixed point in people's lives."
The BBC claims that storylines will tackle the issues and challenges facing the British Asian community in a fresh and entertaining way.
Characters in Silver Street will include property developers, club promoters and a potential Asian football star as well as families with hopes, ambitions and secrets.
The cast includes stage and television actor Jetinder Summan, actresses Hema Mangoo and Bharti Patel and Clive Wedderburn, a long-term regular on The Bill.
