The Devil could care less?
Angry Sony fans have expressed their displeasure earlier in the week over game company Capcoms announcement that the game Devil May Cry 4, originally a Playstation 3 exclusive, would also be coming to the Xbox 360 and PC, by starting angry threads and internet petitions vowing to boycott Capcom games .
The previous games had been Playstation only, which according to some was how the fourth instalment should remain. The boycott, they raged, would remain until DMC4 became a PS3 exclusive again.
Perhaps a little unwisely, Christian Svensson, senior director of strategic planning and research, responded to the crazed fans in a thread in the Capcom Forums, confirming the company's decision to take Devil May Cry 4 to the Xbox 360 and PC. Saying that while the company was ‘moved’ by the passion it had raised in the PS3 fans for their platform, going multi-platform made the best sense. ”It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers,” he added.
Hasn’t he heard of the policy of never dealing with terrorists or crazed fan boys?
The response resulted in such flaming and general furore in the thread that it had to be locked with Svensson who in our favourite comment of the week, said that it had "run its course, gone off course, rolled down a cliff, hit a cow, and then exploded."
The online petition currently has about 7,500 signatures, but one has to wonder what the big fuss is really all about. With negligible real difference in power between the PS3 and 360 one can’t even claim that going multi-platform will affect the quality of games. The era of games being exclusive to one platform is largely a thing of the past and no longer makes much economic sense. The 360 after all does have a larger ‘installed base’ of consumers than the PS3 and that’ll be the case for a while yet.
Capcom going multi-platform is the best way for the company to make money and introduce new players to the franchise, hopefully leading to Devil May Cry 5.
Could all this is fuss just be the old ‘my system is better than your system’ playground nonsense?
