“Everybody relax, I'm here.”
Jack Burton, Big Trouble in Little China.
With the launch of the Playstation 3 on at midnight on Thursday 23rd of March, the battle between the current generation systems was finally fully joined in the UK.
It could be argued that the PS3 has had a bit of a hill to climb during the early part of its life cycle, and Sony’s dominance in the last generation can no longer be taken for granted in this one. The year head start Microsoft gained for the Xbox 360 and the manner in which the Nintendo Wii has exploded onto the market mean that Sony are in a serious contest, something you wouldn’t necessarily have expected a year ago. Just prior to the UK launch the Sony ‘list of problems’ seemed daunting-a higher price point, limited numbers at the Japanese and US launches, a lack of ‘must have games’ and a late European launch. But none of that prevented the system from breaking the UK record for a launch console and shifting 165,000 units in just the first two days.
The UK loves the PS3 it seems, and Sony must have breathed a sigh of relief. There will be a hard fought battle for gamer’s hearts, minds and thumbs this time around, but Sony has a system with a lot of power and huge potential waiting to be unlocked.
And from a glimpse of what’s ahead it’s a wait that’ll be more than worth it.
Here UKMusic.com Gaming presents our top five gems of the Playstation 2 due for release in 2007. Doing a top five has meant focusing on the cream of the crop and while we’ll need to play these games to know their true potential-reviews tell all- for now we’re just sharing what’s got us all stoked up!
