The future is bright
And things only look set to get better, following X06 and arguably the ‘3rd wave’ of 360 titles on the horizon. Developers are really getting into their stride with the 360 architecture and the next set of games is looking fantastic.
This winter we can look forward to titles like Gears of War, the intense third person shooter from Epic, F.E.A.R the first person horror shooter and PC port by Vivendi, Viva Pinata, the quirky virtual life sim from Rare and Call of Duty 3, EA's next installment of the popular WWII shooter series. Gears of War in particular is being hailed as that killer app that will push the 360 to ‘must own status’. Emergence Day in November will see the release of a title that both Microsoft and 360 gamers are pinning great hopes upon. While there isn't quite the spread of games that Microsoft had hoped for, with some premier titles slipping to 2007, what is there is quality, and enough to get many gamers moving, what with no PS3 till the new year.
Gears of Wars : The 'killer app' for the 360 finally emerges?
There’s a whole host of titles on the way to get excited about further down the line, many of which were touted at X06. It's an impressive list, with some key exclusives and innovative titles. Xbox 360 owners can look forward to games like Halo Wars, the new RTS set in the Halo Universe , Bio Shock the impressive looking and AI intense FPS with a difference and Mass Effect , bringing BioWares deeply engaging, story-based RPG style to the Xbox 360, as well as eagerly awaited titles like Fable 2, Fonza Motorsport 2, and the highly promising Assassins Creed in the new year.
And of course Halo 3 looks to be on track for 2007……
The Master Chief is coming : and he *will* own you.
In short, the Xbox 360 is the next generation here in our hands and is an experience waiting to be taken up now. Microsoft claims there are 5.5 million units of the 360 sold already and is predicting to sell through 10 million units worldwide by year's end. The company is agressively spreading the brand, with official launches in countries like India and South Africa countries, that are virgin territory. It's an impressive spread, and owning a 360 can make you part of that gaming community.
You could wait till the release of the PS3 and Wii, but you’d be missing out on the wealth of titles available to 360 owners before the competition even hits the shelves. If, as both Microsoft and Sony have suggested in the past, there is likely to be a trend of buying 2 consoles, the cheaper Wii and a PS3 or 360, the 360 is already making a strong case for itself.
