Default Why do certain MCs try to take over the DJ?????????.....

It was a reply on a different thread (by DJ Dilemma I think) that made me decide to start this thread. But anyway...

A DJ can play music without an MC riding the mic, but an MC cannot ride the mic without the DJ playing music. So why do CERTAIN MCs try to take over the show.

I don't feel THAT strongly about this subject, but it's something that I want to hear other people's views about.

In the past, a few MCs have pissed me off. For example, a few times when I used to play on Dance UK FM, certain MCs would try to take over the show. They would try to tell me what tunes to play...."Ah Platinum, I beg you don't play that tune that you just put on Deck 1, I don't like that tune blood..." or "mix this tune wid that tune". And sometimes make up their own competition for guest list or tickets on the spot. But the WORST THING is when an MC (or another DJ) touches the equipment, for example, wheeling the tune OR cutting up the track with the crossfader or the channel level things while I'm trying to work. This happened a lot when I used to play at Imperial Gardens fornightly. One time I took the mic of an MC and switching on another DJ that done that to me in front of the whole crowd... I don't think that happened again in that club.

Now, on the station I play on, I don't have an MC. Obviously an MC hypes up a set, (and don't get me wrong, there's BARE MCs I LOVE to listen to), but I get to promote myself better by myself and I get to create a personality what the listeners like.

What are your views?????

I would like to hear from DJs AND MCs (and everybody else).

Just do what i do, if they don't do as they are told i turn the mic off. If they can't play as a team, they don't play at all.....

ALSO...another thing I forgot to mention.

SOME (not all) MCs don't know when and WHEN NOT to ride the mic. Some of them MC when a vocal track is playing. They also sometimes ride the mic when a DJ is in a mix, but that I don't mind too much, certain DJs just complain about that because they cannot concentrate. But in general certain MCs don't give a f**k about the DJ, they want to be the star of the show...

This is a good solution as far as the DJ is concerned, but may cause conflict. But hey, the MC cannot do anything without us DJs playing music.

That's right Matt, LOCK THEM OFF!! LOL

beleive MC and DJ should work together. i hate it when an MC's like "yeah blud draw that" and they start $$$$in tryin to reload the tune for ya and they dont really know what there doing and ya get a big scratch on your tune. thats happened to me a few times...

I'm an MC myself, and there's no reason why there shouldn't be parity between the DJ and the MC...if the MC has an idea he should discuss it with the DJ and vice versa, rather than just take control. Teamwork, like Matt said (remember "Oi"? ). But then again, MCin nowadays is totally different from when I started - it's all about screaming at the crowd rather than using the music to make the night better. It's like the overused phrase "vibes" - its lost all meaning nowadays.

Well im a mc but im used to working with certain dj's so i know when they want me to hush.
We have jokes making tapes and stuff and thats why we do it. We dont get on all serious and take it as if everything must be perfect.

We entertain people through having jokes ourselves.

Put it to the test. Who needs who...............

Have a night with just MC's and lets see what they do.

Have a night with just DJ's and i'm sure they'll do alright.

Things will change in 2003.

I think it's important to have both, DJ and MC on a set/night
A good DJ is very important, but a good MC/host can make a night perfect.....that's my opinion

you'll see in january how switzerland knows to rock, matt.... ;-)

Yeah OK, when certain youngsters lock into the radio they wanna hear who's MCing, and they probably want to be MCs themselves, but I still believe the DJ is more important. The average DJ usually gets paid more than the average MC at a booking (probably because the DJ is more important). At raves, certain MCs are not even booked, they just beg to go on the mic.

Also, it's normally the MC who wants to ride over a heavy DJ's set, rather than a DJ wanting a heavy MC on there set. So who is more of the star???

Anyway big up all the famous and non-famous MCs.

The above is just my opinion...

No ones more important, than the other. There is a formula to sort this out :-

1. Vocal tunes = Mc's shut up
2. Bassline tunes = Mc's ride it like no tomorrow

The Dj needs the Mc, the Mc needs the Dj. It is a balance, seen!
