When mixing, when do you start to...

    ...bring in your next tune?

Having cued up your next tune, when do you release the record in order start the mix? Do you always release the next tune on "a"/"the" drop in the tune that you are mixing out?

This may seem like a stupid question, or a stupid point to raise, but I'm still teaching myself the art of DJing and would apprecitae any help and useful tips.

    Thanks in advance.

So you dont always plan for, say, when the vocals end on this tune, the vocals wil start on the next? Or for the first drop on the new tune coming at a suitable point with the tune you are taking out?

Thats how I've been playing up until now. Obviously there is the odd tune that you have to mix differently, but in most cases I have found that on either 16 or 32 bars, there is a noticeable change in the tune, and bringing in the next tune seems to fit in fine.

    Any other tips?

Yes, you have to know your tunes inside out and mix musically.

If you know the vocals of one tune will clash with the next, don't do it...

When I say I'm still learning, I've been learning for nearly 9 months or so now. As with everyone, the first few weeks and months were very depressing - thought I sounded good until I recorded myself, had a listen and just wished the ground would swallow me up. However, I'm now much more coherent and maybe 7 or 8 mixes out of every 10 are pretty much spot on. I wanna learn more, keep practising and get better so that I can start to play out. I'm meant to be playing at a house party (first time) at the end of November!! Scary stuff!!

yea get 2 know ur tunes inside out like sum1 was sayin, if u kno em, u kno when 2 bring in the nxt tunes. if im mixin b-line trax i dnt really wait for 32 bars, i jus go for 8/16 because nost trax get borin. try dropping in tunes especially if u got mc's. and vary ur mixin, dnt jus chop, fade occasionally and use ur treb/mid/bass knobs aswel to make mixing more intrerstin.

oh yer, make sure its in time b4 u start mixin it in

IVE FORGOTTEN HOW TO MIX WHICH IS A TOTAL $$$$$ :@ :@ :@

I used to pull off some aright mixes, when I first started in 98/99. I took a 2 year gap-ish, and now when I step up, its return of the Clangers. Its like:

    + 0.1111111111111111111 = too FAST
    + 0.1111111111111111110 = too SLOW

Im forever touching it. Sometimes Im screetchin a vocal or pad or suttin but I know I gotta touch it or each millisecond, it will worsen.

    >> SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETCH!!!! <<
    *cringe*

Its like the tune jus dont wanna be onbeat. $$$$. when that starts hapening I just allow it and listen one by one. I get pissed quick :@ :@ :@

As for anything in life practice makes perfect!! just keep mixing as much as you can, the more practice you get in the better you'll become!!

As for the house party - i wouldn't worry - most people are prob gonna be rat arsed and stoned! they won't notice if one of the mixes is out!!

    PARTIES ARE QUITE $$$$!

All you really need to do is do a cheap xfade flip - once the parties started tho. people jus wanna hear tunes, basically.
