Comments:
The Macabre Unit are a group of DJs, MCs and Producers all coming from Bedford and on a mission to deliver bombshells on 2004. Last year the Macabre Unit broke onto the UK Garage scene with there track “Slow Jam” which gained much support from all the big established DJs and was one tune that MC’s couldn’t seem to get leave a beat untouched with there flows. Macabre Unit then followed up with the Taurus release on Zodiac Records which also was supported by all the grimey DJs and blew up on the underground therefore creating much more well deserved hype on the Boys from Bedford. Now it’s the New Year and I can tell you the Macabre Unit will be making a big impact on the year ahead. The first releases of 2004 are to be Akuma / Struggle, Tulipz / 1st Blood and Efed Blood / Jam Roly Poly.
Firstly we have “Akuma” this is one of my favourite tracks from the forthcoming releases. It starts with some sort of “warrior speech” possibly sampled from a film or something. Then with no delay “Akuma” drops straight into the beats and bass, Macabre style. The jittery bassline and stepping Hip-Hop influenced beats really make this a track for the MCs to lace, definitely feeling this tune. “Struggle” adapts eerie samples, kind of breaky beats, low strings and Macabre bass not feeling this one as much as “Akuma” but still its good as it adapts different structure and style that makes it unique from any other tracks out there.
“Tulipz” adapts a very stomping feel a bouncy beat, along with some light string stabs and a bassline that has had filters applied to it. This is a track that you just can’t help jarring your neck to and bopping your head at. This track maintains a light bouncy feel but still manages to bring through a grimey vibe I think this is down to the attention of the bassline. “1st Blood” is quite a laid back track and uses light strings, robotic samples, skippy beats and a nice flowing bassline. These two tracks show a calmer side to the Macabre Units productions and again surprisingly I can see Mcs queuing up to spit over these beats!
“Efed Blood” is another track that displays Macabre Units unique identity as a production collective. Not feeling this one massively in my own personal opinion but I can see it been yet another track that the MCs will jump on. This track consists of more eerie samples, strings, punchy beats and a dominating bassline. “Jam Roly Poly” is another track that I’m feeling from the Mac Boys it’s quite simply sick! The track kicks off with a nice melody of strings and cutting drums then it drops into the bassline, again, Mac style! The bassline is heavyweight and the drop is picked up even more with an open hi-hat on the off beat and some wicked sounds accompanying the bassline. The beats on this track are heavy aswell very different drum programming compared to any other tracks on road. “Jam Roly Poly” is another track from Macabre that I’m really feeling.
A few things I’m really feeling about the Macabre Units productions are the arrangements the tracks are kept interesting and they don’t seem to have a dull moment in them at all. Also they are coming through with there own style and sound of UK Garage which is a very hard thing to do but these boys seem to be doing it naturally. Macabre Unit are really pushing themselves to get the year off to a good start with 3 vinyl all of different Macabre clichés and vibes. Macabre Unit is also another group who ignores the talk of “It’s a London Ting” and shows it is possible for “out of London” artists to break through onto the UKG scene. I will be interviewing the Macabre Unit very shortly and will be finding out a little bit more into their background etc. Anyway I’m expecting big business from these in the future so make sure you keep it locked!
Overall Personal Ratings:
Akuma / Struggle --- 8 / 10
Tulipz / 1st Blood --- 6 / 10
Efed Blood / Jam Roly Poly --- 8 /10
