PHUTUREHYPE-TODAY’S FUTURE STARS- PRESENTS THE FIRST ANNUAL FEMALE MC/RAPPING FINALS. TAKING PLACE ON FRIDAY, MAY 28TH 2004
Phuturehype is a concept, which was started in June 2003 by Denise Destini. The aim of Phuturehype is to discover the future of urban/underground music and promote them to the wider audience. This will be done by organising various events to show that talent. The first of these events to be held is the search for the best underground Female MC/Rapper. Phuturehype decided to feature on female mc’s/rappers as rapping is still seen as a mainly male genre, and Phuturehype wanted to dispel that myth. There have been various competitions such as the 8 Mile Battling Championships, which are open to everyone, but you get very few females entering as they feel that male participants won’t take them seriously. Female rappers/mc’s are just as good or even BETTER than their male counterparts, hence the idea for this competition.
Late in 2003, 2 auditions were held to find 10 finalists. Phuturehype enlisted the help of experienced female rappers/mcs, Babyphat, Lady MC and Lady Destiny as judges. The level of talent displayed at these auditions was amazing and it showed that females can be outstanding rappers/mc’s. One of the finalists, Lady Sovereign has just been signed to independent label Casual Records.
The culmination of these auditions has led to the Finals to be held on Friday 28th May 2004 at Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square London WC1R 4RL. The winner will be walking away with £750 plus the prestigious Phuturehype trophy. Various innovative companies have donated prizes for the event. They include Trickster Girl (part of Trickster), Cybelle (US), Iced Out Gear, Sonik Magazine, THTC, Cutthroat Records and Thinking Forward.
