Sidewinder & NSC peoples choice Garage awards.

Been looking forward to this one for a while, last years peoples choice awards was a smash, and as far as I was concerned could only get better. Named artists on the night included Dizzy Rascal, DJ EZ, Martin Larner, Tinchy Stryder, and many more.

We arrived just in time for the start of Masterstepz set, Kofi B & Old skool veteran PSG were on vocal support. This was the first time I’ve heard PSG in a good few years and it surprised me how fresh he sounded. On the delivery of his first lyric the whole arena erupted into frenzy and recited his lyrics back to him. For someone that’s been out of the spotlight for a while this must have been a tremendous feeling. Masterstepz took us back in time and warmed us up with a little old skool at the beginning of his set, slowly bringing us back to the present. This was defiantly a set for the original garage raver and a nice start to the night!

Martin Larner took his place behind the decks while Jon E Cash (the creator of sub low), and Champagne Bubblee picked up the microphone. Bubblee, complete in tuxedo and bow tie, looked like he meant business and on the whole lived up to his image. Martin ‘Liberty’ Larners tune selection could not be faulted, opting for the ‘grimy’ tunes. The first dj to play ‘What’ by Wonder, and as the bassline rolled around the arena the infectious beat took control of everyone. Thousands of people skanking to the most minimalist tune is a sight to see. Larner maintained the precedence that he set and keep the ‘grimy’ tunes coming. Maxwell D made an appearance towards the end of the set, and in effect took it over. As good as Jon E Cash and Champagne Bubblee were they were left stranded as Maxwell highjacked the set.

It was then time for an interlude. Comedian Richard Blackwood, Dr Psycho and Creed attempted to announce some award winners but there seemed to be a mix up with the envelopes so this was delayed, and the ‘Dubplate King’ DJ Slimzee, Maxwell D and Godsgift were ushered on. Slimzee did nothing but live up to his name. Heavy basslines, V.I.P specials, and tight mixing right up until he broke one of the needles. Everything came to a full stop. It was almost as if he refused to play until the needle had been replaced. After some cohesion from the mc’s, and a speedy fix from the engineers Slimzee’s set was back in full session.

Another attempt was made at giving away some awards. After RWD mag got The BOO kroo (animated/comic garage crew of their magazine) to accept the award via the video screens, I used the opportunity to take a walk around and headed upstairs. Radio 1xtra’s G Child was in control of the smaller arena and like the piped piper had everyone under the spell of the music. Know for his remixes, he dropped one or two specials before I headed back down stairs to find I’d missed the start of The Heartless Crew’s set. The HLC had finally made it to the sanctuary, and they certainly made their presence known. Their main skill has to be their ability of getting the whole crowd involved. As Fonti dropped some ragga riddims, Bushkin and Mighty Moe lead as the arena followed them with various dances, including ‘Pun the river’ and ‘Signal the plane’. The antics of a couple over excited ravers brought the set to a very short stop while security handled the situation promptly and professionally, and HLC continued to entertain the crowd.

Another chance to give away some awards, Tinchy Strider the 14 year old from Roll Deep walked away with four awards. One of his own for best new comer and he accepted two for Wiley, and Dizzy Rascal’s best Grimy MC award. Next up was the best old skool dj, and best dj. The Multi award winning EZ.. B-Live was the front man for this one, and although EZ proved why he wins best dj year after year, the crowd seemed to lack the energy of before. B-Live entertained the crowd for the best part of an hour while EZ did his usual of chopping tunes, quick mixes, and technical antics only he can execute with such precision, then he switched to a half hour solo set of old skool and 4X4 tunes. This was a much-welcomed breather, as the gentler tunes and absense of an mc gave you a chance to settle and recompose yourself. I think it was a Todd Edwards tune that was playing when I realised the presence of the Roll Deep Entourage and guests, lingering by the entrance of the stage. The highlight of the night was approaching.

A large number of artists gathered on stage, you could tell this was what everyone was waiting for. The skanking space I had all night became a squeeze as everyone rushed up closer to the stage. Danny weed and Carnage took their place behind the turntables and started off an hour of pure unadulterated set of ‘GRIME’. As each mc approached the mic and spat their first lyric the crowd recited it back word for word as the dj pulled up the tune and set it ready for who was next to spit. There was a slight problem with the microphone levels but it only seemed to affect D Double E, as he was the only mc you couldn’t hear, everyone else came thought clear. Another small incident that was dealt with swiftly by security, and everything was back on track. Dutti Doogz gets an admiral mention for the Lambretta Tracksuit he was wearing, Tinchy had the crowd in what seemed like a hypnotic state, and Flowdan, Flowdan was Flowdan. Other mc’s on the set included Bashey, Scratchy, and Jookie Mundo. After the hour was up, Roll Deep were done, and so was the crowd. As they walked off the stage the majority or the arena walked off to go home and so did we. I kind of felt sorry for Principle, because the start of his set sounded like it was going a good one, but my bed was calling me and calling everyone else it looked like!

The sidewinder team and NSC did well on this event, despite a few minor hiccups (i.e., Tim Westwood video link) it didn’t effect the vibes on the night. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it proved that the garage scene is far from dieing out. The security deserve a mention for the quick way they removed any trouble makers leaving the proper ravers free to enjoy the night. Roll on the DnB awards!

    Thanks a lot,
