my humble opinion: if your pushing new skool:

    start
with jazzy/dubstep - landslide kinda thing - chilled people mellowing getting the drinks in.
move it onto the dark stuff - like slimzee/yourself/hatcha
then finish it with stuff that gets people dancing - breakbeat - oris jay, us, etc etc.

coz dubstep doesnt get people dancing. its too slow and monotonous. you've seen it urself at forward, time and time again.

    just an opinion.

    Dubstep is faster than breaks.

People don't dance to anything at Forward - when Oris played breaks there it went down like a lead balloon.

Just to reitterate what Plastic was saying, there won't be any instances in the future of MCs hijacking a set and shouting down the mic that ain't what we're about at Filthy Dub...it put off alot of girls i've spoken to mainly due to the aggressive delivery and harshness on the ear. In future we will be booking a max of 2-3 hosts and banning everyone bar DJ,Host and camera crew from the box.

As far as music policy is concerned this night will stick stringently to what we advertise on the flyer or what we have playin on our mix CD i.e. Dubstep, Tech Step, Sublow and grimey beats. These are the sounds with little exposure at the moment...the 'garage' market is saturated at the moment in Croydon trust me PALS have that market dominated you just have to look at their next 2 saturdays (Heartlees + EZ). This night was set up to showcase this new sound, the new generation of producers etc etc it would be going against our ideology if we sold out now just to pull in those extra coppers.

I want to reach a point where the club is getting rammed consistently because the reputation of the scene has grown off its own hard work; where people come to Filthy Dub because we're the only night in Croydon catering for that particular sound...we're the only ones that can give them their favourite DJs etc. We want our night to grow in proportion to the scene...I believe this scene is due to blow up simply coz we've been force fed american $h*te and commercial pop for a good 3 years since UKG got locked, therefore I also believe our night has the potential to grow and grow side by side with the sound.Your opinions will help us to achieve ultimately what we all want.

El Sid like the last Filthy Dub the next one will again have a warm up set that is MC free and will play a variety of beatz, to just get peepz into the mood. We will probably only be running from 9-2 next time round as the bar license stops at 2 plus very little people will hang around till 3 on a weekday...11-12 and 12-1 will be when you'll have the two 'bigger' named DJs with hopefully the 1-2 set closing out the night with something a bit raw and interesting. Again we don't wanna pigeon hole ourselves we want the DJs performing on our nights to stamp their identity on each Filthy Dub.

Hold tight for more info this week i'm expecting response from the club VERY soon!

"at one point i think beginnin of ur set it looked like takin off but then kinda dwiddled away maybe coz of the mc.. the one on ur set wernt to tufff to b honest"

Hmm i didn't really see it like that, I recall Plastics set being busy start to finish in comparison to the attendance we had. If anything this was helped by the MC...who heard the crowd chattin back his lyrics?? This mc hosted very well and as a promoter i couldn't have asked for anything more from him, he got the crowd nice and lively without chattin about guns or shouting...give him a chance to prove himself the majority of you won't have ever heard of him but he used to be big a while ago in Croydon...he's been away for a long time for his own reasons...he has the potential to grow and become a more accomplished talent with every outing...trust the promoters have nuff respect for his work ethic, flow and talent...be open minded.

El Sid - if our night were uptown in a trendy kinda soho club that would definitely work.

Right now the club the night's in is DEFINITELY trendy and very plush !!

However... Our clientele is more grime orientated so we're hitting them with beats from that angle. From the response of the tracks on the night, tunes like What, Strung Up, Cha etc. were getting huge response - other dubstep and breaks tracks weren't really having much impact.

I think the way the night was planned out went fairly well...

9-10:30 - Played all the beats people know at the moment, some mc based tunes. Tracks like Invasion, Take Time, U Aint Ready, Wise Up. Mainly vinyl bus still bassy and danceable.

10:30 - 12 - Smooth Criminals played a set mainly of their own stuff (Benga and Skream beats). Unfortunately there was a bit too much MC'ing which led to a few girls standing still staring at the area where the mic was ! The set was heavy and built up nicely for the 12-1.

12-1 - Plasticman. I started with Saddam by SLT and people were slowly bubblin' - then I dropped Gladiator and everyone went mad. Then Cha, same reaction. I continued grimy while kandyman was spittin and then some other mc jumped on and I played more FWD'y beats like Oris, Bogeyman, Dubchild etc.

1-2 - Mark One - mainly his own beats with some grimy stuff chuked in.

2-3 - N Type - playing a lot of his own stuff and mixing it up with a couple of DnB tunes to the very end when it was closing up time.

The DnB was on the spot spontaneous stuff. Other than that the mixture of grime and FWD went down really well thru the night. So I think we'll continue along that route until the clients are screaming for somethin else.

I can see where Prestige is comin from as he's not into the beats (saying we shouldn't play it all night). But if we mix genres, girls might not like it when things get grimy and decide to leave. At least they knew what to expect from the start, and it seemed to work fairly well.

Yeah, the night was live, everyone keeps telling me it was good and that they'll defiantly reach again.

The night was varied well, selection wise in my account.
In our set, Benga only dropped his own dubz, Skream played 100% FWD Style. I dropped some grime, a load of Plasticman and a bit of Oris etc.

Then Plastic was switching things up also, I was hearing choons like Camel Ride, Digital Mysticks - B etc with some grime mixed in for good measure.

And as Plastic said, Mark One and N-Type played sets with the majority of the beats being their own productions n a bit of oldskool jungle right at the end.

So all in all it was a good Mix of FWD\Sublow\Grime.

Looking forward to the next one!

Keep up the good work lads, it's all about getting this night, ready for summer 2004, when things can really take off.
I'm a reach the next one, and give it my own verdict, but on a whole, well done for pulling the first night off.
Oh yeah, and lose the armshouse mc's.

Yeh we'll be toning down the MC'ing for the next one.

I'm sure it'll be all good - stay posted for more info. Last I heard the club still needed to confirm the date with Dave (promotion manager of Filthy Dub)
